BACITRACIN ointment is an antibiotic used to treat skin infections, or to prevent infection of minor burns, cuts or scrapes. Generic bacitracin skin ointment is available.

They need to know if you have any of these conditions: animal bites large areas of damaged skin puncture wounds severe burns an unusual or allergic reaction to bacitracin or products containing bacitracin (such as Polysporin® or Neosporin® ointment), neomycin, or any other antibiotic, medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives pregnant or trying to get pregnant breast-feeding
How should I use this medicine?

Bacitracin ointment is for use on the skin only. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Wash your hands before and after use. Apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected area. You can cover the area with a sterile gauze dressing (bandage). Do not use your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course of medicine prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. Do not stop using except on your prescriber's advice.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

There are no drug interactions with bacitracin skin ointment. Tell your prescriber or health care professional about other skin products that you are using, including non-prescription skin products.
Tell your prescriber or other health care professional about all other medicines you are taking including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also, tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check before stopping or starting any of your medications.
What side effects may I notice from using bacitracin skin ointment?

Side effects are unlikely from using skin preparations. Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: chest tightness, or difficulty breathing lower back pain persistent rash, redness or swelling (this may indicate an allergic reaction or an infection that does not respond to bacitracin) swelling of the lips or face
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome): skin irritation
What should I watch for while taking bacitracin skin ointment?

Tell your prescriber or health care professional if the infection does not get better within a week.
Do not get bacitracin skin ointment in your eyes. If you do, rinse your eye with plenty of cool tap water.
To prevent the spread of infection, do not share skin products, or share towels and washcloths with anyone else. Throw away any unused skin ointment.
Where can I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children. Store at room temperature between 15°and 30°C (59°and 86°F). Protect from light. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
